Building a Thriving MLM Business In A Difficult Economy
The current global economic recession has made it extremely difficult for businesses large and small. Experts will be analyzing and theorizing about the causes, contributing factors and responses for decades to come. What is known is that customers have had to make difficult decisions drastically altered their spending patterns in what may be a permanent change. Advertising in the normal fashion is rapidly losing influence, which is why many families and individuals are showing an increasing interest in MLM and home business opportunities.
Anytime there is a recession, and our current situation is the worst since the great depression, the reaction by the public at large is calculable. Just as companies have to become more streamlined and reduce operating expenses, families have to tighten their belts as well. Right now Americans are as frugal as they have ever been and, for the most part, if something is not absolutely necessary, we simply are not buying it. This, ironically, provides an open door for the right business approach.
Multilevel marketing or MLM is not a new type of organization, though many are seeing the business model for the first time. Unlike traditional companies, in multilevel marketing the focus is not only on a quality product, but also on the business opportunity. In the difficult economy we now find ourselves mired in, the first thing Americans want to know is how it happened and creating a home based business may be a great solution for many who are struggling just to survive.
We will not have the answers we desperately want in order to make sense of this latest economic crisis for some time, it is the consumers that ultimately make commerce work. The American dream has long been connected to home ownership, and discovering that the financial industry was manipulating the market for its advantage at our great risk has made trust and integrity a prime component of our valuations in business dealings of every nature. It is for this reason that many seek home business opportunities, as it is more comfortable to do business with those we know and trust.
While the search for the individual or group we should blame will likely unveil a community of culpable groups, it is generally believed that the precipitated events stemmed from the shaky financial moves in the housing market. Banks sought ever greater profits by making loans easier to come by, and when individuals who normally would not qualify for loans get them, there is a greater risk of default. When that began to happen, the financial death spiral began, what we learned is trust and integrity can succumb to the pursuit of the dollar.
The practical application of this knowledge is that the fancy advertising campaigns; slick digital presentations no longer have the impact they once did. Our assessment of what we should buy and from whom has shifted to a more grounded philosophy built on belief. This has reawakened the notion of selling things through the use of a living sales force. This tried and true method of having trained and empathetic individuals who believe in their product or service act as the means for its sales and service is more powerful now than it has been in years. At the core, this is the essence of every MLM company.
A MLM business organization which is comprised of cascading levels of individuals who actually know each other and work together in the presentation of product or service to market is a strong organizational model. It facilitates the building of trust through the many interpersonal facets of human interaction at a real every day level. Some businesses recognize the draw of real contact with people and we see it in advertisements focusing on the customers ability to talk to a person on the phone. Multilevel marketing allows for the next step, face to face communication that fosters trust.
The market has changed, probably forever, as big business demonstrated that if it is too big and too impersonal and many have lost trust. This created a period of austerity where consumers became reluctant to spend money on anything. In this environment, making a sale is difficult for any business, which is why the person to person approach is more critical than ever. With this kind of general mindset, MLM opportunities are on an increase, and it represents an opportunity for many to build a great home based business.
Home Business Opportunity Vs. Home Based Job
If you are like most, at one time or another, you have thought about working from home. It may be in the car on your long commute or while you were seeking daycare for your kids. It may have also just been some thought you had while you working in your office, for someone else. Working from home is great, but there are some things to consider before you decide to stay in your pajamas and run your business.
I have worked as an attraction marketing and home business coach for some time now, and have had the opportunity to counsel many who are seeking a home based opportunity. There are many incentives to this type of business model, such as being able to set your own hours, having more time with family, and taking advantage of tax incentives. You can earn a generous part or full-time income in a work from home setting. However, you must consider your options when building or starting your home business.
As you consider your alternatives, there are two major work from home businesses: 1) a work from home opportunity; and 2) a work from home job. Many are not clear on these two distinctions, and it is important to know that they are very different.
Home Business Opportunities are generally MLM or network marketing companies. MLM’s are great, as they allow someone to partner with a large organization and get started immediately. Many of these home business opportunities can be started for a low initial investment, and have a full program developed to help you build a successful business. MLM’s are also leveraged based income, meaning that as you build your own team you will be compensated based on the effort of others. This is the best type of home-based income, as you are paid on what you start not finish, and you have a unlimited potential for your earnings.
Initial investments for work from home business opportunities can range from about $35 to thousands depending on the company. You should evaluate the reputation of the company, the products offered, and the overall opportunity and not just the cost involved. Additionally, you should have a good understanding of any additional costs, such as monthly required orders. Some home business opportunities will require you to spend hundreds monthly on products, and even warehouse them for future orders. As a coach, I have encouraged my clients to fully evaluate any businesses that require stocking inventories, as you may be stuck with unsold product. There are many things to consider when evaluating a home business opportunity, and seeking the support of a mentor will help you to make a good decision.
Work from home jobs are very different, in that you will be employed to work for another business. While some larger companies have some work from home positions, many work from home jobs are freelance: such as writers, virtual assistants, editors, and even telemarketers. A number of positions will allow you to work your own schedule, and be paid per hour or project. While some of these positions will pay well ($10-50 per hour), you will generally be trading your time for income and if you do not work, you will not be paid. Additionally, as a contract employee you may find yourself without income between projects.
Regardless of your decision, the most important thing to know is that you must treat your home business like a business. You need to be a self-starter, and maintain motivation. There are many distractions at home, such as the TV, household chores, kids, and other hobbies. It is very easy to be distracted, and find something else to do when you should be working. I often tell clients that starting your work from home business is like going to college for the first time. You can choose to go to class or not, no one is going to call mom if you don’t. However, if you miss class you will not succeed in college. If you do not put the work into your business, you will fail and there will be no boss to hold you accountable. The rewards are huge if you put in your time, and success can be had with just a 30 second commute around your already busy schedule… the choice is yours. Are you ready to work from home?
